Summer is here, and it’s time to enjoy the warm weather, sunshine, and fun activities. (If that’s what you love; in my case, I hate the heat, summer, and I have no fun at all when it’s hot outside!).
In this blog post, we’re going to learn some useful English vocabulary related to summer.
Expressions and Idioms
- Dog days of summer
- The hottest days of the summer.
- Example: The dog days of summer are perfect for swimming and ice cream.
- Full of hot air
- Talking a lot but not saying anything meaningful.
- Example: Manu is always full of hot air about his summer plans.
- To soak up the sun
- To enjoy being outside in the sunshine.
- Example: I love to soak up the sun on the beach.
Phrasal Verbs
- Cool off
- To become less hot or make someone/something less hot.
- Example: Estela and I went to the pool to cool off after the hot day.
- Heat up
- To make something hot or warm.
- Example: The kitchen heats up quickly when you cook in the summer.
- Dry off
- To become dry or make something dry.
- Example: After swimming, Josh used a towel to dry off.
- Get away
- To go on a vacation.
- Example: TJ and I decided to get away for a few days to relax by the sea.
