Practice English with Slowly app: what is it and how does it work?
Practice English with Slowly app is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to improve your English (or any other language) naturally. Slowly lets you exchange real-style letters with penpals from all over the world, so you can practise vocabulary, grammar and writing at your own pace. It feels calm, and if you are a bit introverted or shy like me, you will find that making friends through this app is super comfy and opens a whole new world through your phone. I absolutely love it. If you are extroverted, it is great as well — many people on the app share amazing stories, and reading them always makes my day better.
Slowly works like a digital version of traditional letter writing, and that is one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much. I have been exchanging letters since I was very young (I will talk about it in another post). I remember going to the city centre to buy English magazines, and inside them there were small adverts where you could find people from many different countries looking for penpals. One day I posted my own ad, and I still remember the excitement when the first envelopes arrived. My mailbox suddenly filled with letters from all over the world, and through those handwritten messages I started meeting wonderful people. It was awesome!! (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
Even today I continue writing physical letters because I love the calm, the connection and the feeling of opening an envelope that has travelled far to reach me. A few years ago I discovered Slowly and realised that I could enjoy the same experience on my phone without losing the charm of traditional penpal communication. It allows me to meet people from many cultures, practise the languages I am learning and help others practise theirs, all while making new friends in a relaxed and meaningful way.
This slower rhythm is exactly why so many people prefer to practice English with Slowly app instead of using fast chats or stressful social media.
Is Slowly free? What can you do without paying?
One of the things I love most about Slowly is that it is completely free to use. You can practice English with Slowly app every day without paying a single euro or dollar. The free version works perfectly: you can write letters, receive replies, save your conversations and connect with people from anywhere in the world. You can even exchange pictures, as long as both people agree to it.
There is a paid option, but it is mostly for extra features such as sending more letters at the same time or accessing special stamp collections. Honestly, the free version is more than enough, especially if your goal is to improve your English and enjoy meeting new people in a relaxed way.
Collecting stamps on Slowly
One of the cutest parts of the app is its stamp collection. Each time you connect with someone from a new place, you receive a unique stamp from their country or region. You can also unlock stamps during events or special celebrations, and many of them are free. One of my favourite things is that users can send suggestions for new stamps. I once suggested a design inspired by a UNESCO monument in my city, and they approved it! It became a beautiful stamp and I was so excited when I saw it inside the app.
These stamps do not affect your writing, but they make the experience more personal and fun — perfect for people who love collecting things.
Writing style: informal, friendly and natural
When you write on Slowly, most people use an informal and friendly tone. It feels similar to writing postcards or personal letters, so there is no pressure to be perfect. If you want ideas for expressions or vocabulary, you can check our previous Postcrossing post here: Postcrossing: practicar inglés con postales.
Many of the expressions you use in postcards work perfectly on Slowly too, which makes it an ideal place to practise everyday sentences and natural English.
